The Complete Guide to Location and Geo-Tagged QR Codes

Traditional addresses can be confusing. "123 Main St, Suite 4B, around the back near the blue dumpster" isn't exactly easy to type into a GPS. For event organizers, off-the-grid retreats, or sprawling campuses, communicating precise locations is critical.

Geo-Tagged QR Codes

A Location QR code encodes latitude and longitude data. When a user scans it, their phone automatically prompts them to open their preferred mapping application (Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze) with a pin dropped exactly on those coordinates.

Perfect Use Cases

  • Wedding Invitations: Direct guests precisely to a remote barn or beach ceremony.
  • Food Trucks: Since your location changes daily, print a dynamic QR code that points to your current GPS coordinates.
  • Real Estate: Guide prospective buyers to newly developed plots that don't have registered street addresses yet.

How to Get Exact Coordinates

  • Google Maps (desktop): right-click the spot. The latitude and longitude appear at the top of the menu; click them to copy.
  • Google Maps (phone): long-press the spot to drop a pin. The coordinates show in the search box.
  • Apple Maps: drop a pin and swipe up on its card to see the coordinates.
  • On site: open the location QR code generator on your phone and tap "Use My Current Location".

Coordinates Beat Addresses

An address has to be interpreted by the maps app, and new buildings, large campuses and rural properties often resolve to the wrong place. A geo code carries the exact point, so people are guided to the entrance you choose, not the centre of the building.

Add a place name as well. Many maps apps show it as the label on the pin, which reassures people that they are going to the right place.

Print It Where People Need It

Place location codes where people are about to set off: on invitations, booking confirmations, flyers and the door of your old premises if you have moved. Outdoors, print the code large and with strong contrast, and test it in daylight, because glare and shadows make scanning harder.
