Comparison of free and paid QR code generators

Search for a "free QR code generator" and you'll find hundreds of tools. Many of them aren't really free: they ask for an email address before the download, add a watermark, or create "dynamic" codes that stop working when a trial ends.

This guide compares the most popular options in 2026 on what actually matters: whether you need to sign up, whether the code keeps working, what happens to your data, and what you can customise. It replaces our earlier "no signup" list and our OmniQRHub comparison, so everything is in one place.

What to Look For in a Free Generator

  • Static codes. A static code stores your content directly and works forever. A dynamic code points at the provider's redirect link, which can stop working if you stop paying. See static vs dynamic QR codes.
  • No account needed to download. Designing a code and then hitting a sign-up wall is the most common complaint about "free" tools.
  • Where your data goes. Wi-Fi passwords and contact details are sensitive. A generator that works in your browser never sends them anywhere.
  • Print-ready files. SVG or PDF output, and a proper quiet zone around the code.
  • No watermark on the free version.

The Generators We Compared

QR Code Monkey

Good: free static codes with good design options and high-resolution downloads, without an account.

Watch out: the page carries ads, and the dynamic-code options lead to a paid service.

QR Code Generator (Pro) and QR Tiger

Good: scan analytics, bulk tools and APIs for large marketing teams.

Watch out: most features need an account, and codes created on a trial are often dynamic, so they can stop working when the trial ends. Paid plans are priced for businesses.

Bitly

Good: combines short links, QR codes and click analytics.

Watch out: you need an account, the free tier is limited, and every scan goes through Bitly's servers.

Canva

Good: handy if you're already designing a flyer in Canva.

Watch out: only URL codes, with very few design options, and you need a Canva account.

Your browser's built-in generator

Good: Chrome and Edge can make a QR code for the page you're on from the share menu. No website needed.

Watch out: links only, with no colours, logo or other content types.

ZXing QR Code Generator

Good: open source, simple, and supports contacts, Wi-Fi and more without an account.

Watch out: plain black-and-white codes and a dated interface.

OmniQRHub

Good: 17 code types (links, Wi-Fi, business cards, menus, payments, events and more), no signup or watermark, and only static codes that never expire. Codes are made in your browser, so what you type isn't uploaded. You can change colours, gradients, dot and eye shapes, add a logo or a "Scan me" frame, and download PNG, SVG or PDF. There is also a bulk generator and a scanner.

Watch out: no dynamic codes and no scan analytics. That's deliberate: tracking scans means routing your customers through our servers.

Which Should You Use?

  • You need per-scan analytics across a big campaign and have a budget: a paid dynamic service like QR Code Generator Pro, QR Tiger or Bitly.
  • You're already in a design tool and only need a plain link: Canva or your browser's built-in generator.
  • You want a code that works forever, looks good, and doesn't collect data: a static, client-side generator like OmniQRHub. If you want to change the destination later, point the code at a page on your own domain and update that page.
